length doesn’t matter with meat on the rib cage its the girth and that was a fat fish. you can see that there is a good amount of meat on the rib cage at 2:15

thundermistlures October 13, 2009 at 6:30 pm

With a larger fish, there is usually more meat on the ribs, but these fish were smaller & not much there.

Another option is to take the ribs & remaining meat, and use it as a stock for fish soup or chowder.

Thanks for writing in. Good luck on the water & good fishing!

didn’t get the meat on the rib cage

Try cutting you fillet into “bite size” pieces. Then simply coat them with bread crumbs & fry them in oil or butter.

There are a couple of other very good recipes on the Thundermist fishing tips web site that you may find very interesting.

Thanks for writing in & good fishing!

what would be the best way for a beginner who has never filleted a fish to eat a small mouth bass?

Smallmouth are fairly good eating. The flavor of the fish is greatly improved by removing the dark muscle meat along the lateral line area. The largemouth does taste better though. Thanks & good fishing!

Thank you so much for this video!

it was very informative for me, and actually had straightforward, non-fancy camerawork (for once) which I do appreciate.

thanks again!

Glad you enjoy the video.

Circle hooks do work great for bass, and keep in mind you do not need to set the hook when using circle hooks.

Once you get a bite, simply just start reeling in.

Good luck on the water & thanks for writing in!

Thanks for writing in. Usually, on these smaller fish, there is not much meat on the rib cage, but on larger fish, there certainly is.

Thanks again for taking time to write to us & we wish you all the best on the water & good fishing.

this is a great video. FYI to anyone why was wondering, from my own experience, worms are the best for bass fishing in private lakes. But something i have not tried is those “Circle Hooks” that help prevent gut hooking. Yall know anything about them? are they good?
