me and my dad have started to go fishing in the Delaware river and we dont exactly know what were doing. we fish from the bank, so we dont get it out super far. anyway i have a bunch of different kinds of lures and whatnot but i dont really know how to use them.
spinning baits: we have like 10 of these spinner baits (look like these http://www.bassclubdigest.org/summer08/products/Rooster-Tail.jpg) now are we just supposed to cast and reel them in, or do we like let them sit out there, or do we let them float down stream? should we cast upstream or down?
The next lure i have i dont know what its called but heres a picture http://www.tackletour.com/images/picmgbtlivejig40.jpg mine look like that but smaller, about the length of a pinky finger. i have never used this one but i know it floats, so how do i fish with this bait.
“softplastics”: i have some of these but dont use them either. do they even catch smallmouth bass, or a different fish. how do i put the hook in. and again, how do i fish with it.
i should say that we fish for smallmouth bass and we occasionally catch pickerel

I’m not real sure what part of the Delaware river you are fishing. I am in central NY and can fish both the West and East Branch of the Delaware. Both have lots of Brown trout, Rock Bass, some small mouth bass, carp, suckers, bullhead/catfish and occassionally you can find a pikeral, eel and shad when they run.
The link for your rooster tail lure didnt work for me but I am very familiar with them. The Roostertail is a very versatile lure and can be used on both trout and bass.. and even work great on pikeral, walleye and pike.(The Rooster tail is a cast and retrieve lure; change the speed up or occassionally a small jerk on the line will change the action of the lure a little to help entice a bite).
Up here neither the west or east branch of the Delaware is that wide or really all that deep so that seconds lure you show may not work as well in the shallow water situations. I would use something like that in a lake or reservior.(speaking of reserviors, both the East Branch of the Delaware river feeds the Pepacton Reservior know for its huge Brown Trout and Small Mouth bass; The West Branch feed the Canonsville Reservior, which also has some nice brown trout, but I catch a lot of really nice small mouth bass and pickeral. It is also great for Crappie and bullhead/catfish.
Most all of your artificial lures are cast and retrieve, and you usually dont let them sit except for jig type lures where you would slowly bounce them across the bottom, letting the rest from time to time.
The key thing is, there is really no wrong way to fish, just go out there and practice with different things and different ways of retrieving(speed, jigging etc..) Most importantly.. HAVE FUN!!
go get the book ” the art of freshwater fishing” it will have all the information you need about baits and lures as well as what species prefer what baits and stuff. good book with awesome photos.
Use soft plastics like Sinkos , lizards , all colors ,flukes , worms , craw fish , small mouth love craw fish and also minnow helgermites , madtoms look these up and go pick some up i used all of those yesterday in the new river in virginia and im going again in like 3 hours so just try those and
rooster tails are good but you will catch mostly smaller fish like rock bass or red eyes.
isnt that like a totally polluted river??????????????????
