my largest smallmouth out of the river get caught on topwaters like storm chug bug and rebel pop-r. i’ve also caught some nice size bass and good numbers of them on blue fox inline spinners. and i never go to the river without a couple packs of senko-type lures like yum dingers in various natural colors like crayfish and earthworm.

I fish the rivers here for smallies and my number 1 bait is Yamamoto Skirted Double Tail Grub. Use a wide gap hook and run it through the center of the skirt, back out and into the end with the tails. Leave the point exposed, next to the body and it is usually snag free. Use just enough weight to keep it bouncing along the bottom and hang on tight. Big small-mouth love them. Small crawfish colored crank-baits, spinner-baits, tubes and top-water baits can also catch them.

A lot of variables….depends on time of year, lake/river, water clarity, etc.
Spinner Baits, Tubes, Jigs, crank baits, top water, flukes, I have caught them on all of these baits.
But he!! I don’t know nothing just because I fish Dale Hollow which happens to be where the record SM was caught.

As with Large Mouth Bass there IS NO BEST LURE. A lot of lures will catch fish, as stated above, a lot of variables to take into consideration when going after the elusive Small Jaws.

What FS has down for a bait (Panther Martins) works very well in rivers for about any thing, from Trout to Bass.

Crankbaits in shad and crawfish colors. Jig’n'Pig, Spinnerbaits. All will work under the right conditions. I just prefer to throw a crankbait most of the time.

I like in-line spinners or soft craws for Smallie’s. In-Line Spinners such as Rooster Tail’s will catch a bunch of smallmouth bass. Panther Martin’s and Mepp’s also do. Almost all of the soft craws work. But, i like purple or grape when it comes to color. Rig ‘em Texas style, if you don’t know how search it on google.

Hope i helped ya out.

Anything that resembles a crawfish. This is there food of choice. If you find the craw fish, you will find the smallmouth. Good baits for this are tubes, and craw colored crankbaits.
